“Mama Wata Sightings” by Bambi Chicque

The mystical shrines of Mama Wata deities are often rendered in their most ancient

primordial interpret of the mermaid.  The ancient Africans, known as the Dogon’s,

claim to have known the existence of mermaids and mermen

4,000 years ago and titled them as Nommos.

The archaic homes for Mama Watta and Nommos’ is written to be from

Orion’s Belt (Sirius celebrated star system) and were water spirits born from the sea.

Stories from Londoner’s Naturalists Henry Lee (1883) recounts that “in

the sea of Angola, mermaids are frequently caught and resemble the human species.

They are taken in nets, and…” are heard to shriek and cry like women.

Mami Wata derives from the words mommy/mammy and water.

Although there are no real historical roots to Mami Wata,

their stories can be traced linguistically through the languages of Africa.

To ask one from that beautiful and mysterious part of our world, they would say

Mami Wata came from the ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia

(derived from two African words “Mama” and “water”).

The first honored water goddess in Mesopotamia mythology reads from the

stories of their Creation Flood, also known as “Mami”; Mami Aruru

was a known ancient Babylonian prayer as the

Creator Of Life (Dalley 2000, p. 51-16, Stone 1976, p. 7, 219).

Where ever our beloved mermaids came from or live today,

I always vision them to be free, gleeful and perky!

Splashing about with their great tails,

walking on air above the sea bubbles and blissfully watching the ships from afar.

I imagine they make their homes in the deepest of our seas among sunken ships

where treasures have been collected to decorate their ocean quarters.

Creatures of such beauty must exist!  I believe in mermaids, don’t you?
